HENDRICK GERRITSZ POT

Hendrick Pot
Amsterdam ca. 1580-1657

Provenance
Private collection, Germany.

Portrait of a seated man at a table with writing utensils.
Hendrick Pot was born in Amsterdam, but worked in Haarlem, where he held various positions in the militia and the guild from 1606 onwards. Pot is best known as a painter of small portraits.

On the reverse side of this painting is a label with an old attribution to Frans Hals (in German). Hendrick Pot was a contemporary of Hals in Haarlem. Both used the leather-upholstered chair with lion’s heads, a piece of furniture common in the seventeenth century, in their paintings.
