Julius Porcellis impressively depicts ships struggling forward in stormy seas, highlighted by his masterful light effects. A comparable depiction with the ships shown slightly closer up and the pier in the right background is housed in the Museum De Lakenhal, Leiden (inv./cat.no. 2068).
