Berchem (Antwerpen) 1598/99- 1660 Haarlem
Pieter Claesz was an eminent Dutch still life painter of the 17th century. Born in Berchem ( near Antwerp), he became a member of the Antwerp guild of Saint Luke, Relocated to Haarlem, one year later. Many of his still lives are known as ‘Monochrome Banketjes’ painted in a monochrome tone.
His son, Nicolaes Berchem who started as his pupil, became a respected landscape painter.
The Metropolitan Museum New York; the National Gallery of Art, Washington; the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam; the Prado Madrid, and many other museums have works by
Pieter Claesz in the collection.
